History

After Jesus' resurrection and his ascent into heaven there was a dispute between the apostles of Jesus who would succeed him. Both Peter and Mary Magdalene claimed to be the true successor of Jesus. Mary Magdalene traveled as quickly as possible to Rome. She arrived before Peter and spread the word of Jesus. She had many adherents. The emperor of Rome, Tiberius saw her as a potential threat to the stability to the empire and commanded to bring her to the palace, but the story took a different turn when the emperor was impressed by her teachings and he, himself converted to Christianity and made it the state religion. Mary Magdalene was appointed as the first Pope of Rome in 34 AD. Under her papacy Christianity was spread to all of the Roman Empire. She also began construction of the St. Mary's Basilica (which was later claimed by the church to be the St. Peter's Basilica). She died in 70 AD while still in her term Pope. She was originally buried under the St. Mary's Basilica before being transported to the Chartres Cathedral to prevent the Church from founding and destroying her sarcophagus and the evidence that she was the first Pope. The question who was the first pope is currently being discussed by historians and the Church.
