The first person to assume the title of King of the Libyans was Mohammed as-Senussi,in 1821, though his power did not survive him. In the 19th century the emirs of Tripolitania became increasingly dominant over the other emirates of Libya. The continuous list of Libyan monarchs traditionally begins with Mohammed ash Sharif in 1891,which was declared King of the Libyans after the unification of Fezzan, Cyrenaica and Tripolitania.
