Consuls are the continuation of the Roman Consul in the Eastern court.
The consul in the eastern court was a continuation of the roman consul, an ancient title similar to the modern day president or prime minister. In the eastern court however it became irrelevant and was used as an honorary title. Most of the senate had little power and their only role was to suggest edicts for the Emperor and be the symbol of Rome.
