Libya (Arabic: ليبيا, Lībiyā), officially the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (الجماهيرية العربية الليبية, Al-Jamāhīriyyah al-ʿArabiyyah al-Lībiyyah), is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. The modern day government was established on November 17, 2011, after the bloodless coup against Muammar Gaddafi. In March 2012, Libya recognized the autonomy of Cyrenaica.
Libya is currently headed by President Mutassim Gaddafi (former army officer and fifth son of Muammar Gaddafi). Since its establishment, the Soviet Union has become one of the more active supporters toward the post-Muammar Libya.
