Leading Labour rebel and prominent leftwinger Tony Benn challenged Prime Minister Denis Healey for the leadership of the Labour Party.

The challenge was seen as symbolic rather than an actual attempt to oust Healey, with some seeing Benn as a potential stalking horse for other, more credible candidates such as David Owen and Neil Kinnock.

Healey won convincingly on the first ballot, but the fact that Benn had been able to gather enough support to mount a challenge did damage his leadership and was ultimately to help bring about his resignation two years later.
