Kuban People's Republic is a socialist state largely populated by the Kuban Cossacks and Adyghes along the Kuban River in Russia, which is a close neighbor to the Don Republic, to the north.

History[]

Doomsday[]

On Doomsday a nuclear missile exploded on the Black Sea just outside of the city of Taganrog, destroying the city and causing a small tsunami along the coast in the area, which effectively destroyed the coastal resorts on the Sea of Azov. Tuapse, a city that has an oil terminal and a depot, Sochi due to its port facilities and the likelihood of eliminating members of the countries leadership, along with Novorossiysk due to its port and naval base, were all nuked. A non-nuclear cruise missile also damaged the industrial district of Krasnodar, causing few deaths and little damage to the city as a whole. These nukes brought a massive wave of refugees from different ethnic groups in the direction of Krasnodar and Maykop. Most would be sent onward to Maykop because it was believed by the local leaders of the Kuban Cossacks that it would end up less radiated, as well as it being undamaged.

Winds from the west brought radioactive dust in contact with rain clouds over the Black Sea, which then rained on and polluted the rivers with radiation for a couple days in mid-October. This had the effect of both radiating the fish in the river, as well as some crops there, rendering them inedible for the short term, as well as radiating the people, causing sickness in those who had been out in it too much, but not harming all too badly. An epidemic of influenza swept through the region late in 1983 and caused many deaths as well. Many domestic animals would be killed and burned because it was believed that it would be a bad idea to eat them, just like with the fish.In the long-term, this would result in increased risk of cancer for the inhabitants, as well as the death of most of the fish in the rivers and a series of severe famines that would last until 1988, when it became easily possible again to communicate with and get aid from the Don Republic to the north, with which contact had been made shortly after the events of Doomsday.

Post-Doomsday[]

On May 21 1988 the Cossacks of the Don Republic formally seceded from the USSR, which caused the surviving people in Kuban to speak of doing the same. Things would come to head on April 13, 1989, when the Kuban Cossacks declared their succession from the Soviet Union as the Kuban People's Republic, named after the old state that had been declared during the Russian Civil War. However, they remain much more agreeable to the concept of socialism even today, and it shows.

The country is still recovering today from the aftermath of Doomsday, but is in little danger of collapsing due to the support of the nearby Don Republic and its economy.

It is considered to be more willing to help the Soviet Union than its neighbor, however, and considers itself an ally. It does, however, want to keep its independence and will fight to keep it.

They have a strong navy for their size, for like Crimea they gained some of the remains of the Black Sea Fleet after Doomsday, though it largely sits in Crimean ports today, as the usable ports in Kuban territory are all fairly small.

Military[]

The Kuban Armed Forces largely consist of the Kuban Navy, which is based around the remnants of the Black Sea Fleet that was in Novorossiysk on Doomsday and escaped the blast there, as well as the Kuban Marines. A small army exists as well, which garrisons the frontier outposts, as well as the major cities. A pair of small fighters which managed to survive the blasts in the region are located in Maykop as well.

Economy[]

Economically, the Republic is fairly weak, though as trade picks up in the region, this is changing.

A railway built early in the naughties between the Republic and Crimea has led to increased trade and cooperation between the two nations. Talks are also underway between the two and the Don Republic for the construction of a railway between the two Cossack Republics, financed and owned by Crimean - and Greek - business interests. A port, to be run by Crimean merchants, is also under construction at the small city of Gelendzhik, on the Kuban-Crimea railroad, and the point where the Don railroad would begin.

International Relations[]

Currently, the Republic holds what amounts to an alliance with the Don and Crimean Republics. It is thought that there is a reasonable chance of this being solidified in writing in the near-future.

They have tried to join the League of Nations, but the Siberians have blocked their membership in the Council, like all of the other survivor nations in the former Soviet Union were.

Outside those powers and the rest of those in the region, relations tend to be nearly non-existent. Greece and Turkey are really the only ones who any contact is held with, and both have consulates in Krasnodar. It is generally suspected that the Republic will go whichever direction Crimea moves, internationally. This was shown to be quite accurate when the Republic, in exchange for help with the railway construction and a promise of money in the future to expand port facilities, signed the Black Sea Accords as a junior member on August 31st, 2011.
