In 1587 a trader named Arndt Krupp joined the merchants' guild in Essen and quickly became one of the wealthiest men in the city by purchasing the property of families fleeing from the plague. Arndt died in 1624 leaving his family business to his son Anton. During this time the Krupp family made a name for themselves as gunsmiths during the Thirty Years' War.
