History

Originally a Portuguese colony, Brazil became a kingdom following the Revolutionary Wars and the flight of the Portuguese royal family to the New World to escape the invading Castileans.

The colony (a principality) was upgraded to the status of kingdom as part of the United Kingdoms of Brazil, Portugal and the Algarves. It only dropped its pretension to Portugal in 1825 following a treaty of mutual recognition with the Iberian Republic.
