[edit] History
[edit] Doomsday Event
During Doomsday Bermuda lost contact with all other countries around the world, including Britain. Soon after Bermuda stopped getting any supplies from other countries. The governor at the time, John William Morrison, 2nd Viscount Dunrossil, reacted quickly to this and put in emergency measures. These included things such as using any spare land that didn't need to be protected due to wildlife to be used as agricultural land.
[edit] 1983 - 1986
During these few years after the event it had been determined that a Nuclear War had occurred. During the first few months when all electricity had left the islands they went into panic, people rioted on the streets and general anarchy descended upon the islands. Only one man managed to regain control when it seemed all was lost, Governor John Morrison. The governor had made Bermuda totally isolationist, but they got by due to the governors Acts. Also as some of the nuclear radiation swept over Bermuda from the east coast of America the governor created the 'NHS' of Bermuda.
[edit] NHS
After the radioactive deaths in the hospitals in Bermuda it was realized that the NHS should be introduced into Bermuda. The governor John William Morrison enacted the 'NHS Act' which was practically based on the British NHS system. This led to his popularity rising. The NHS had volunteer nurses and doctors, as no one could be paid during the first year after the Nuclear War. Though people got by with general kindness and decency, along with many acts that were passed by the Governor along the way which got people buy and insured that enough food was given to the islands population, though it had to be heavily rationed.
[edit] The New King
After John William Morrison retired in 1986 after succesful keeping Bermuda in order, with sufficient medical services and enough clean water and food for people. His popularity was large and in fact after he had retired people called for him to become the new official King, this was supported by the Premier at the time (John Swan). After a month of debating this proposal John accepted and in 1987 he became King John I of Bermuda. He was admired and adored by most of the populace.
[edit] The Sail West
In 1990, King John I called for a small band of men to be put together to go and explore the east coast of North America in case there were any survivors. On the 1st of April they set out towards the east coast of the USA, but the men never returned. A memorial was built in Somerset village for the 10 men who'd lost there lives. After this the King enacted a policy of isolation.
[edit] Current Times
In 1993 King John I, due to the nationalism in Bermuda, changed the national anthem to 'Hail to Bermuda'.
In 2000, King John I died peacefully in the previous Government House which had been converted into 'Bermuda Hall', the newer residence for the Monarch of Bermuda. His daughter Joanna Catherine took over becoming Queen Catherine I of Bermuda. Due to his immense popularity after King John I died the 22 March became a national holiday in the Kingdom of Bermuda.
A General Election was held in 2009 led to the Bermuda National Party winning the election and so Ewart Brown becoming the new Prime Minister.
Queen Catherine I reversed Bermuda's isolationist policy and on 20 June 2009 a Bermudian scouting party made contact with the Celtic Alliance.
[edit] Government
After King John I had been crowned there was a call for a new governmental system due to this change and separation from Britain. Firstly the role of a 'governor' was abolished, and also the 'Premier' was renamed as a 'Prime Minister'. The government change included influences mainly from Britain, as a Parliamentary Democracy was set up.
[edit] The Parliament
- See Also: Bermudian Political Parties, Bermudian Government
Within the Bermudian Parliament there are 11 separate Constituencies, of which 9 are the current Parishes, and the other two are Municipalities. The municipalities each give 3 Members of Parliament (MP's), while each of the Parishes give 2 MPs. This makes up 24 MPs overall that run the small nation of Bermuda. The voting format is through the 'First Past the Post' method. At the moment the current Party in power is the 'Bermudian National Party' with around 14 MPs, while the opposition party is the 'Liberal Bermuda Party' with just 8 MPs. Another MP is an independent in the 'St George's' Constituency. And the last MP is from the 'Bermuda Forward League' in the constituency of Hamilton.
[edit] Electrical Supply
The Kingdom of Bermuda previously relied on imports of fossil fuels for its electrical supply, though after Doomsday the imports of these fuels halted. After the initial 5 months the power stations that were on the island were finally shut down, the men who'd previously worked there were put with the challenge of knocking the stations down. After this the Bermudian emergency government had the task of bringing power back to emergency services, such as the radio and hospitals. They couldn't find any viable way of creating energy cheaply (such as fossil fuels,) so it had to look for ways to create energy even if it came at a large cost. Eventually it was decided that on Berry Hill around 10 'Wind Turbines' would be built, this would allow for at least a little energy that was require for the city of Hamilton. Later more Wind Turbines were added, at the current time there are around 30 wind turbines on Berry Hill, and around 20 on Scotts Hill near Somerset Village, and there are around 5 others scattered around the Islands. Also recently in 2005 the Bermudian Government started to advertise Solar Panels that could heat water and even produce small amounts of electricity.
[edit] New Flag Proposals
In June 2009 a referendum was held and a new flag was chosen, this marks another occasion in which Bermudian nationalism has risen, also the 20 June is now Flag Day in Bermuda. The new flag is a design in which there are 9 stripes, these are to represent the 9 parishes of Bermuda. Also in the canton is an image of a red background with the Bermudian Seal in the middle.
[edit] Military
The Bermudian army increased dramatically in recent years through the new found nationalism from King John I and Queen Catherine I. Around a fifth of the population (12,000 people) are in the military of Bermuda. Though most of these are reserves and only went through 2 years worth of military training, and only around 1000 people are active personnel. The air force of Bermuda is very minor, while the navy is slightly larger with a cruiser heavily laden with weaponry.
