The Kingdom of Austria is an important crown within the Kingdom of Bavaria. Austria is special, since all other realms in Bavaria are not Kingdoms, save for Bavaria itself. In essence, the status of Austria coupled with Bavaria makes the entire Bavarian realm a composite monarchy.
The Kingdom was established when the Archduchy of Austria was defeated in a war against Bavaria and Spain in the mid-seventeenth century. Bavaria annexed most of northern Austria, including the capital of Vienna and the city of Linz. In an effort to elevate the Austrian state, already a center of political, cultural, and scientific advancement, King Leopold II created the Kingdom of Austria and placed himself on the throne.
