King George VII, born Prince George Albert Edward of York in 1931, was the second and last child of King George VI (then the Duke of York) and the former Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. He has one elder sister, Elizabeth, married to Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh. At the age of only 21, he succeeded his father to the throne. In 1955, he married Princess Astrid of Norway, his second cousin and daughter of King Olav V of Norway and Princess Martha of Sweden and a great-granddaughter of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom (George being his great-grandson), the two also being jointly descended from King Christian IX of Denmark. They have three children:

  • Prince George Albert Frederick, Prince of Wales, born 1956; married 1981-divorced 1996 Diana Frances Spencer; two sons, Princes William Arthur Edward and Henry "Harry" Albert David of Wales
  • Princess Alexandra Elizabeth Maud, Princess Royal, born 1958; married 1986-divorced 1994 Michael Joseph Phillips; two children, Edward Michael and Georgina Mary Phillips
  • Prince Edward Christian Harold, Duke of York, born 1961; married 1999 Carolyn Rose Hambro; two daughters, Princesses Victoria Louise and Astrid Mary of York
