Here's what happened.
Rommel was in command of Operation Barbarossa, leading to him becoming disillusioned with Hitler, due to his endless bungling and interference.
A large sea battle occurs between the British and Italian navies in the Strait of Gibraltar. Despite the forces being about evenly matched, incompetence on the part of the Italian Admiral led to their defeat.
The British gain a decisive victory over the Germans in Africa, but this is followed up by a massive assault by the Italians that pushed all the way into Egypt.
The Japanese fail to take the Philippines and, despite initial success in China, are stopped by the Chinese army. Meanwhile in the Pacific, after initial engagements the U.S. destroyed the Japanese naval forces off the Caroline Islands to draw pressure off the Philippines.
