Kazachstan lies in eastern Europe and Central Asia, limiting north with Sibiria, north and west with Russia, west with Crimea, south with Armenia, Turkey, Iran, and south and east with Uzbekistan.

The Kazachs were one of the successor states of the Golden Horde. After the fall of the Khanate of Kazan under the Russians, and through and alliance with the Khanates of Sibir and Crimea, and the Ottomans, the Kazachs made the main opposition to the Russians, and by the mid 17th century they had occupied the territories of Kazan and Aztrakhan.
