Kennedy served as the United States Secretary of State between 2005 and 2009, under President John Kerry. He was a key person in the talks between the United States and the Soviet Union during Kerry's presidency. He is the son of ex-vice president John F. Kennedy, and the nephew of ex-president Robert F. Kennedy and ex-vice president Ted Kennedy.
Kennedy successfully ran to become the Democratic presidental candidate on the 2012 elections, winning over fellow candidates Joe Biden and John Edwards. Kennedy defeated incumbent John McCain on the election. He was inaugurated as President in January, 2013.
