John Andrew Gabbert (October 4, 1836 - July 10, 1897) was a 19th-century Nationalist politician and party boss from Philadelphia, known for being the state's iron-fisted Governor from 1883-1891. Gabbert was the National Party's candidate for President in 1892, in which the aging and ailing Gabbert - who had not desired the nomination - lost to John Rockefeller during a lackluster campaign, and failed to carry his own state. Known as a staunch supporter of the "right of the enterprise" and the various business interests in his state and as a fervent and articulate proponent of the war with Alaska, Gabbert was regarded as a compromise candidate between the two wings of the National Party that had emerged by 1892 in the wake of the post-war economic crisis.
