Jean Victor Marie Moreau (14 February 1763 - November 8, 1820) was a French general and statesman instrumental in assisting Napoleon I's rise to power in post-Revolutionary France. Eventually a rival of Napoleon who was banished to the United States, he became well-known in his new country for commanding the American forces during the Canadian War under President James Madison and under the direction of Secretary of War William Crawford, with whom he built a close friendship. Several towns in the United States bear his name, most notably the Yorktown suburb of Moreau, Huron.
