The Empire of Japan, known colloquially as Japan, the Tokugawa shogunate or Edo Bakufu (Japanese: 大日本帝国 Dai Nippon Teikoku, 徳川幕府 Tokugawa Bakufu, 江戸幕府 Edō Bakufu) is the Japanese government established in 1600. The heads of government are the shoguns, and each was and is a member of the House of Tokugawa. The Shogun ruled from Edo Castle and the capital was moved from Kyoto to Edo.

Japan collapsed into civil war in 1807 when several disgruntled Daimyō (nobles) declared Shizamu Narioko of Satsuma the new Shogun. The domains supporting the so-called Shizamu Shogunate were led by Daimyō who felt that the Tokugawa government shouldn't have been interacting with westerners, who they considered 'barbarians.'

However, by 1808, Shizamu was dead, and the Daimyō had all either been imprisoned or committed suicide. With Japan once again united under Edo rule, the Empire began a program of rapid modernisation and expansion, expanding into Karafuto Island and the Amur region that lies east of Chinese territory and west of the strait separating Japan from the rest of Asia. In the middle of 1811, Japan purchased the Philippines from the Spanish Empire and in 1813 Korea surrendered to Japan and its government replaced by a Japanese puppet state.

With western assistance, Japan's Imperial military is growing steadily, especially the Imperial Navy, which now possesses thirteen sailing brigs, five frigates and six ironclads, one of which was transferred to the Japanese Navy as part of an agreement between the Shogunate and the United States during the Boshin War. Reorganisation of the Imperial Army under the guidance of Spanish military missions have also helped to modernise the military. Industrialisation in Japan has led to unprecedented productivity, and it is hoped that through this Japan can eventually take what is seen as its rightful place as a major world power.
