James Francis Byrnes (May 2, 1882 – April 9, 1972) was the 15th President of the Confederate States (1939-1945). Before being elected president, he served as a member of the House of Representatives from the state of South Carolina (1911–1925) and as a Senator (1931–1938). He would leave office in the final days of World War II after a Supreme Court decision that nullified an emergency powers proclamation to keep him in office until the end of the war. Upon leaving office, he would join former president Hugo Black as a Justice of the Supreme Court (1951–1972).
