James Alexander Gabbert (September 10, 1840 - June 8, 1911) was an American Democratic politician from Tennessee, best known for serving as Mayor of Nashville, a U.S. Congressman for Tennessee and as the Democratic Candidate for President in the 1880 Presidential election. Following his failure to become President, Gabbert returned to the House, where he served until he was defeated in the Nationalist landslide of 1898. He was erroneously regarded by both contemporaries and historians as a protege of then-President Josiah Marks, despite the two rarely meeting and their only similarities being their embrace of the "Cosmopolitan South."
