The Kingdom of Italy encompasses the northern part of the OTL Italian state. Originaly a French satellite republic, it was transformed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1805 by Napoléon I, who also became its first king. Napoléon's stepson Eugène de Beauharnais was appointed as viceroy.
In absence of a second son, Napoléon also made Eugène de Beauharnais heir presumptive to the kingdom. By so Eugène became king after the sudden death of his stepfather in 1812.
