The Italian Empire (Italian: Impero Italiano), formerly called the Kingdom of Italy, was created after Italy joined other European powers in the "scramble for Africa", and gained possession of several colonies. In 1935-36, it invaded Ethiopia and defeated it, making the country part of Italian East Africa. In the 1920s, the Italian army captured Albania, which became an Italian protectorate. They also established a puppet state called the Independent State of Croatia, though it eventually became a puppet state of Italy's ally, Nazi Germany, and at the end of World War II, Croatia became nearly free of foreign influence.
In 1950, a Cold War began between Italy and Germany.
