Iran, also known as Persia, is a nation in Middle East.
Iran was originally a monarchy and tolerant nation in the Middle East until the overthrow of the monarchist regime in 1955. Since then it became the Republic of Iran, a democracy lasting from 1956 until 1975 when it turned into an Islamic Republic of Iran after Ali Khamenei became President (later on in 1985 the Supreme Leader) of Iran. In 1993 Iran began nuclear testing and also missiles testing, which put the world on high alert. Soon, however, Ali Khamenei was assassinated in 2002. Elections were held and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won. Since then Iran has become a somewhat hostile nation, known for actually building and testing nuclear missiles. Iran also has a dispute with Arabia with the small islands off from each other coastlines in the Persian Gulf, and small skirmishes has happened almost each year. Even though Iran had originally won the islands from Arabia in 1979, tiny skirmishes still continue between Iran and Arabia.
