The Iowa Confederacy is a Des Monies based state. It claims all of Iowa but it's control is loose.

History[]

Des Monies survived Doomsday but suffered a rise in crime rates prompting Governor Norman Erbe to declare martial law. Erbe authority was initially limited to the Des Monies area, but contact with other cities were grandly re-established. Most of these cities accept Erbe as legitimate ruler of Iowa but they demand autonomy which Erbe agreed to. Most of Des Moines economic infrastructure fell into disrepair after the nuclear war but parts of it survived. The main thing keeping Des Moines afloat was Erbe having the state guard defend farming towns from raiders in exchange for food. Erbe launch a project to create irrigation aqueducts to improve agriculture. He also disturbed the seed stock of pioneer corn company to people so could start victory gardens in there back yards. Martial law was lifted in 1976. Erbe decide not to run the election of 76. Trade deals with Green Bay, Indiana, and by extension North Ohio were signed in the late 90's. Electricity returned to Des Monies, Cedar Rapids in 1997. A few other power stations have opened in the past 16 years. However only little more then 50% of Iowa has Electricity. Business Men from Indiana and North Ohio had been investing in starting business ventures in Iowa since the early 2000's.

Economy[]

Iowa's economy is mainly agriculture. The main products are hogs, corn, soybeans, oats, cattle, eggs, and dairy products. There is some industry, mainly food processing. The main industrial center is Cedar Rapids, home to the Sinclair Meat Packing Plant, The Cedar Rapids Oats Mill (established when a businessman bought the old Quaker Oats facilities) and the Iowa Steel and Iron Company, the latter of which is in severe decline due to reliance on slag. An ethanol processing plant open in Cedar Rapids in 2006 with the help from Indianan and North Ohioan businessmen. The currency in use, as per GLRU laws, is the International Banknote/Shilling, although shillings and notes minted and printed in Iowa are not as often used due to the large number of non Union trading partners.

International Relations[]

Iowa is a member of the Great Lakes Region Union, and has excellent trade relations with the other members, as well as the Sioux. They often war with Ilini and Coways, and have politically clashed with the Scientologist Church of Illinois, and the Kentuck Empire.

Government[]

Iowa is a lose republican confederacy. In recent years. There has been some talk about creating a more centralized government. While the idea of unitary state is widely unpopular outside of Des Monies, the idea of a 5 or 6 state federation has modest support within the Capital.

Military[]

Iowa as a small but adequate army. They're main defense problems are Coways to the South, Sioux the the North and West, and Ilini to the East. The Iowan Army is designed to combat these threats, and is comprised almost entirely of Horse Archers, Armored Lancers, and a small corp of auxiliary scouts, hired from the very same cultures they fight, though mostly Sioux, as they are better traders then war-makers. The Ilinis have conquered sizable portions of the Iowan countryside before, though in recent years, re-militarizing the Mississippi River has mostly curbed this. Coways are more often a nuisance, raiding the southernmost Iowan settlements.

Culture[]

The national play of Iowa is the 1957 Broadway Musical the Music Man. A film of the Music Man came out a few months before doomsday. Governor Erbe host it's premier. He co-hosted the the showing of the Music Man in 1997 with then president Robert T Anderson at the grand opening of the first post doomsday movie theater in Iowa.

The popularity of the Music Man has to Marching Band to be a cultural staple in Iowa.

Education[]

Education is universal from kindergarten though high school. The only college in Iowa is the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
