The Integralist Era of Brazilian history (Portuguese: Era Integralista) refers to the forty-eight year period between 1938 and 1986 when the country was under the leadership of the Brazilian Integralist Party, who overthrew dictator Getúlio Dornelles Vargas and established a fascist state.

Fall of the Estado Novo

Vargas had come to power after the death of the Old Republic in the Brazilian Revolution of 1930, when the military junta ceded power to him after the dissolution of the National Congress and the abrogation of the constitution. Vargas had assumed dictatorial powers in 1937 after denouncing a supposed Communist plot against him.
