Previous Prime Minister
The 1971 Indian general election saw the INC win a plurality but it was unable to form a government.
Following its victory in the 1966 general election the INC had governed as a majority for 5 years.
Whilst the INC won a plurality of seats it was shut out of government by a coalition of the Communist Party, Muslim League, Liberal Party and Akali Dal.
