Previous Prime Minister
The 1956 Indian general election saw the INC win the first Parliamentary majority in the history of the Indian Federation.
The 1955 general election saw the formation of the first government which did not include the INC, however the coalition proved unstable and collapsed in early December, leading to fresh elections.
The elections were a landslide victory for the INC who won the first Parliamentary majority in federation history, whilst all the other major parties lost ground.
