The Imperial Federation is, though its name may suggest otherwise, a confederation of several of the nations that used to be part of the British Empire. It was formed in 1948 after Britain lost most of its Asian possessions to either the Japanese or to the newly formed republic of Bharat. To at least keep some control over its former colonies Britain decided to set up an international confederation in which the individual member states would be autonomous in all affairs except for Foreign Affairs and Defence. The Imperial Federation also served to protect Britain's trading interests in it former colonies as it also functions as a free trade zone.

Though most of the so-called "Old Commonwealth" had already been granted independence, their common cause during the war made them unanimous enough to join the confederation. Though especially Afrikaner ruled South Africa, and Canada with its large francophone minority, were sceptic at first and managed to water the initial plans for a real federation down to a mere confederation.

Apart from the Foreign Affairs and Defence of its member states the Imperial Federation also obliged itself to defend the nations of Iceland, Greenland and the Faeroes. It also manages these countries Foreign Affairs which makes that they are sometimes seen as de facto members. They are however not represented in the federal parliament, which makes that they have no say in the Federation's policies.
