The Imperial Armed Forces of Cambodia was officially created in 1155 by Queen Suryavana. The official title is the Imperial Armed Forces, protector of the Emperor and the realm. 1,302,645 men are currently serving in the armed forces.
Imperial ArmyAfter the intensive reform during the reign of Jayavarman VII, the Imperial Army was drastically improved by adopting fighting strategy of the Roman Army and gunpowder from China. The Imperial Army was divided into several ''Srea Pul'' (Cambodian equivalent of corps) with roughly 6,500 men. Each ''Sre Pul'' consisted of cavalry, artilleries, and main infantry. A group of soldiers with the same profession were called ''Korng Pul'' (or division/brigade). The modern Imperial Army comprises of 12 Sre Pul (799,060), each with roughly 65,000 men, and an army reserved of 101,223. The Imperial Army is divided into two main army groups, the North and the South. The army group north has eight Srea Pul and stations on the mainland, while the army group south stations on the island territories.
The Imperial Navy was created alongside the Imperial Army. Traditionally, its roles was to protect merchant ships from pirates and transport the Army and supply. The roles of the Navy was changed in the 15th century when the Indian Ocean trade networks became too valuable for the country to loss. The Imperial Navy built its fleets by looking to the Spanish. The Navy established outposts in theIndian ocean on small islands, many were peaceful while some were by force. At the height of its power in the 18th century, the Imperial Navy operated 1023 ships, and during World War II it operated 2500 ships compared to today 210 ships.The Imperial Navy consists of three fleets including the home fleet, the Indian Ocean fleet, and the Pacific Ocean fleet. The Navy has 35 destroyers, 22 missile cruisers, 15 nuclear-powered attack submarines, and five nuclear-powered ballistic submarines plus support ships. The prides of the fleets are 6 Nuclear-powered Jayavarman class aircraft carriers. The first next generation Rajendravarman class aircraft carrier will become fully operational in 2018. The Navy plans to replace its aging fighter KF/A-9 swordfish with the F/A-35C JSF.
Imperial Air Force
The Imperial Air Force was founded in 1915 as a result of the First World War. During World War II, the Imperial Air Force suffered the highest casualty with 25% rate. The Air Force operated 6,879 military aircraft and 2466 Nuclear warheads. The Imperial Air Force is the only country beside the United States to have fully operational fifth generation fighters. The Imperial Air Force is structured into four major commands including the air strike command, the ground strike command, the air supply command, and the air-space defense command.
Current SituationSince World War II, the Imperial Armed Forces underwent yet another reform, modernizing and

The Imperial Armed Forces is ranked as the second most powerful military in the world. Since World War II, it has rallied in international affairs, in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. With global-reach capabilities, large military budget and personal, the Imperial Armed Forces is likely to remain the one of the world's most feared military for long to come.
