The Illyrian Republic is a nation that evolved out of the French Illyrian provinces. It was granted independence by Emperor Napoléon II in 1845 as he felt that it would be impossible to retain hold on the provinces in the long run. The provinces were subsequently turned into a kingdom in a personal union with the French Empire.
The kingdom lost a large part of its territory to Serbocroatia in The Second Great War and not long thereafter the monarchy was abolished and the Illyrian republic was proclaimed.
