Hubert Horatio Humphrey (May 27, 1911 - January 13, 1978) was an American politician who served as the 36th President of the United States (1966 - 1969), a position he assumed after his service as Vice President of the United States (1961 - 1966). He previously served as United States Senator from Minnesota from 1949 until 1960. He campaigned unsuccessfully for the Progressive presidential nomination in 1960, Humphrey was asked by John F. Kennedy to be his running mate for the 1960 presidential election.
