Family Trees

From House Justinianus

The following list shows all the descendents of Sabbatius (better known as the father of Emperor Justinian the Great of the Roman Empire), from whom the House of Girguis claims descent.

  • Sabbatius (460 - unknown) ~ Vigilantia (465 - unknown)
    • Emperor Justinian I (483 - 565) ~ Theodora (500 - 548)
      • Balbila (517 - unknown) ~ Anastasius (515 - unknown)
        • Iohannes (535 - 575) ~ Georgia (535 - unknown)
          • Georgius (572 - unknown) ~ Proba (577 - unknown)

At this point in time, it was well documented that Georgius resided in Leptis Magna, in Libya. Georgius was, reportedly, one of the provincial patricians in Roman Libya after the fall of the Kingdom of the Vandals. He would marry Proba, the daughter of a powerful Roman exarch. They would have, among other children, a son named Nicetas, who would play a major role in governing Alexandria and from whom the Girguis line continues to descend.

  • Nicetas (590 - 628) ~ Chrysanthe (601 - unknown)
    • Gregoria (612 - 632) ~ Emperor Constantine III (612 - 641)
      • Emperor Constans II (620 - 660) ~ Fausta (632 - 665)
        • Emperor Constantine IV (649 - 685) ~ Anastasia (650 - 711)
          • Heraclius ( - ) ~ Dianoia ( - )

Following a series of imperial patriarchs, the House Justianianus line from which the House of Girguis descends then became removed from Constantinople during the Twenty Year's Anarchy. Due to their high-ranking position, and following the forcible removal of Justinian II from the imperial palace, Heraclius then led his branch of the family to Alexandria, which had fallen to Islam in 641. Nonetheless, a notable Christian population still remained, to which Heraclius and his family were quick to assimilate.
