Hot Springs, Arkansas is a town located in the US state of Arkansas and the county seat of Elger County. The town, as of the 2010 census, has a population of about 45,000.
The city is renowned for the natural spring water which gives it its name, and as a major tourist destination due to its reputation as a spa town. From the late 19th century through the 1950's, Hot Springs was also a major center of illegal gambling and prostitution as an aside to the springs, and the town was alternatively run by local gangsters or, for a while, the Covenant-based Jackson crew which led to the city's boom during the 1920's and 30's. After the rise of prominence of Las Vegas, Hot Springs' popularity declined alongside a crackdown on the area by federal and Arkansas state officials, and today its only tourist draws are its legitimate spa destinations.
