Clay was inaugurated President of the United States on March 10, 1825 after President William H. Crawford was assassinated on the grounds of the White House. During his term as presidency, Clay signed the Indian Removal Act, which forced many Native American nations to be relocated from their homelands east of the Mississippi River to Indian Reservations in the Northern Territories. However, the Five Civilized Tribes - Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole were allowed to keep their homeland.
