Helmut Kohl was the first democratic elected Chancellor of Germany since the beginning of the Third Reich. Kohl, member of the Christian Democratic CDU/CSU, became Chancellor in 1987.
In 1997 he announced that he would not run for a next Chancellorship in 1998. He was succeeded by Edmund Stoiber, also from the CDU/CSU.
