Hawaii (HI) (Hawaiian: Hawaiʻi) is a US state located in the Central Pacific and is one of only three US states to entirely occupy an island chain (the others being the Bahamas and Micronesia). As such, it shares no borders, land or maritime, with any other state or country. Admitted to the Union as the 56th state on August 21, 1956, Hawaii is the fourth most recent to achieve statehood in the US, after Micronesia, Puerto Rico, and Guadeloupe & Martinique. The state capital and largest city of Honolulu (pop. 405,000) is situated on the southern coast of Oahu, near the US Navy's strategic Pearl Harbor naval base that was the focus of Imperial Japan's infamous December 7, 1941 attack, an attack that effectively rallied American support for the Allied cause and brought the United States into World War II.
