Before 1791, the presidents of the United States in Congress Assembled had irregular terms, and each term only lasted about one year. So Alexander Hamilton created the Hamilton Presidential Reforms. These stated that:
1. A president’s term is lengthened from one year to two
2. Each president will take office and leave office on January 10th
3. A president may not have more than two terms
The reforms are put into effect as soon as Hamilton leaves office on January 10th, 1792.
