Settled by the Portuguese, Guiana developed the fastest of the other South American nations. Despite conflicts with both Venezuela and New Spain (Brasil), and territorial gains from both of those countries, Guiana has been at peace for most of its existence. While originally using the native people as a labour force, the Portuguese colonial government eventually joined Spain, France and England in importing slaves from western Africa.
