Guatemala City, locally known as Guatemala or Guate, is the capital and largest city of the United Confederation of Central America. The city is located in the western part of the country, nestled in a mountain valley called, in Spanish, Valle de la Ermita. In 1865, it had a formal population of 65,000. Guatemala City is also the capital of the Province of Guatemala.
