Grampian Television (referred to on air as Grampian) is the ITV franchisee for the North and North East of Scotland. Its coverage area includes the Northern Isles, the Western Isles, the Highlands (except Fort William and Lochaber, which have always received Scottish Television), Grampian, Tayside (except the Kinross area), and parts of north Fife. The station has been in operation since 30 September 1961.
Grampian is owned and operated by ITV plc, which purchased the station from Carlton Communications in the year 2004, and operates under the license name of Grampian Television Limited. Before that, Carlton had purchased Grampian Television in the year 2000 from United News and Media, which purchased Grampian in 1997.
Grampian's regional news programme for Northern Scotland is called North Tonight and is supplemented by short news bulletins on weekdays. The station also produces regional television commercials.
In 2008, the United Kingdom began its 5-year programme to cease analogue television broadcasts as part of the switchover to digital television, with the eight transmitters covering the Grampian Television region (Angus, Rosemarkie, Knockmore, Eitshal, Durris, Bressay, Rumster Forest and Keelylang Hill) switching over from May to October 2010.
