A trade union was established in the Golden port which was formed to protect the workers in the shipyards. When a union member was illegally dismissed for having to visit his dying son, the Union voted unanimously to strike. James Smith, when notified of the strike ordered the union members to return to work or face the consequences of "being disobedient".
300 armed soldiers marched into the main dockyards and rounded up all the strikers and their families. Then they were marched into the main town square and summarily executed. The remaining workers went back to work.
