The German War, also known as the German Civil War, was a brief civil war fought from 1948 to 1949. This war was the first major conflict after World War II and is cited as nearly starting a Third World War. It marked the beginning of the brief Second Interwar period, taking place between World War 2 and the Cold War.

History[]

Prelude[]

Following the end of World War II, Germany was divided among the Allies. America created a communist state in its occupation area, known as the "German Democratic Republic". It was funded and given by America and was encouraged by Sarah Leslie to spread communism. In response to the planned unification of British, French, and Russian-occupied under a single government and a single currency: the Deutsche Mark, the Workers' Congress convened to determine the future of Germany. On June 24, 1948, the Workers' Congress voted in favor of invading the remainder of Germany. Wilhelm Pieck, the chairman of the German Laborers' Party, was selected to be the temporary leader of South Germany, and the German War began.

Attack on the Allies[]

South Germany invaded through the west, capturing Baden-Baden, Bad Oeynhausen, and then North Berlin; the capitals of each zone and then spreading outwards. By May 12, 1949, the remainder of Germany was captured by the German Workers' Armed Forces. Britain, France, and Russia established their own anti-communist regime, the Federal Republic of Germany, with Theodor Heuss as provisional president. On June 26, a coalition army of British, French, Russian, and anti-communist German forces were launched into Germany with the intention of stopping the communist state. South Germany was forced to retreat inwards towards its capital. South Germany requested reinforcements from America, but these were never received as America was focusing on Japan. As a result, Frankfurt was captured and the South German government and army were dissolved.

Aftermath[]

Following the war, Germany was united under the Federal Republic of Germany, a capitalist democracy. This war lead to a distrust between the two global superpowers: America and Russia, planting the seeds for the Cold War.
