The Republic of Georgia (Georgian: საქართველოს რესპუბლიკა, Sakartvelos Respublika), colloquially known as Georgia (საქართველო, Sakartvelo), is a nation state located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. A former republic of the Soviet Union, Georgia gained independence in 1991. The nation came under Soviet fire during the first years of independence by annexing Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 1992, and assisting pro-Soviet forces during the Civil War by 1993. Despite these early tensions, Georgia has become a friendly (though moody) ally of the Soviet Union.
