The Republic of Georgia (Georgian: საქართველოს რესპუბლიკა, Sakartvelos Respublika), colloquially known as Georgia (საქართველო, Sakartvelo), is a nation state located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. A former republic of the Soviet Union, Georgia gained independence in 1991.
Despite hopes for peace between the former republic and the newly reformed USSR, conflict erupted when the two regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared their independence from Georgia and declared their intent to be annexed into the USSR. These moves by the two regions began the War in Abkhazia. After over a year of fighting, the two nations signed a peace treaty. Georgia recognized the USSR's claims to Abkhazia and South Ossetia in exchange for a currency union with the USSR in order to rebuild the devastated region after almost three years of war.
