George Armstrong Custer (December 5, 1839 - September 20, 1908) was an American cavalry officer and politician, known for his service in the Indian Wars and the Alaskan War, as well as for his attempts to receive the Nationalist nomination for the Presidency in 1892 and his service as a Senator for Michigan from 1895 to 1907.

Custer's legacy and reputation are varied; while an extremely savvy politician, he was regarded by many of his peers as a self-styled celebrity and awful tactician, whose battle strategies got his men killed. Many biographers regard the fact that Custer escaped the war with his reputation intact as a reflection upon just how much blame was attributed on Arthur Perry.
