George, Duke of York and Edinburgh (George Frederick Ernest Albert; born 3 June 1865) is the brother of King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and second son of his predecessor Edward VII. Raised alongside the King George took to the sailor's life to his father's pleasure and continued to serve after his father's ascension.

George married his first cousin Marie of Edinburgh, daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and left active duty in the navy in 1907 following an injury on board the HMS Agamemnon. As the spare Prince George was once viewed as a potential George V however he has supported his brother's reign with enthusiasm, almost as much as his enthusiasm for stamps.

Following Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha's death Edward VII granted his then extinct title, Duke of Edinburgh to George so that Alfred's eldest child and heir by blood Marie could be Duchess of Edinburgh. The King attempted to invest the title directly onto Princess Marie of Edinburgh however there was little support for such a trivial issue in parliament and the issue was tabled.

George and Marie have had two sons during their marriage:

  • Prince George of York and Edinburgh (George Ernest David Andrew Patrick Born 18th October, 1897)
  • Prince John of York and Edinburgh (John Frederick Alfred Edward Born 22nd July, 1900)
