Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian and Yugoslav army commander, most notably during the Great War. His actions are often considered to have triggered the beginning of war in 1914 when he successfully assassinated the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand. After his death, he became a symbol of Slavic Individualism and nationalism, and is remembered every December 21st in Belgrade, Yugoslavia during the Serbian History Festival.

Princip, during his years of service as a general, was reported to be much more humane and understanding than his counterparts, treating Italian and Croatian prisoners with the utmost respect during the Dalmatian War.
