Gaul Survives

After Caesar conquers Gaul, a distant relative of Vercingetorix is able to reunite the Gallic tribes and start an uprising. By 43 BC an independent state of Gaul was established, though governed along Roman lines. After a second war from 12-8 BC, Rome ceded Gaul its Alpine provinces, Germania, and Narbonensis, thereby establishing the basic shape of the state that would come to be known as Gallia.
