The French invasion of Singapore on May 18th, 1907 is considered one of the great feats of modern military cunning, taking the English garrison there by surprise and capturing the island within only five hours of fighting with minimal casualties. The event nearly triggered a war with bellicose Japan and is considered one of the key early actions in the longer period of early-20th century military campaigns undertaken by the French Empire known as the Colonial Wars.

The capture of Singapore resulted in the island, as well as neighboring parts of the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, being seized by the French Empire and turned into the Imperial Colony of Singapore, as per the Colonial Edict of 1910.
