Freedom Fighter is a 2004 English film written, directed and produced by Michael Stern, who opted to go for a low-budget project after several high-profile American films. Shot and made in England and Scotland and starring exclusively English and Scottish actors, Freedom Fighter follows the friendship between Sean Connery (Gerard Butler) and Liam Fletcher (Ewan McGregor) over the course of two decades, most importantly during the Scottish Civil War.

The film won the English Film Critic's Association Best Picture Award and netted Stern a Best Director nomination, and made Butler a bankable star. It was Stern's second film concerning the Scottish Civil War after 1991's Revolt.
