Freedom is the sixteenth and final studio album of the British singer-songwriter, Syd Barrett. It was released in 09 December 2016.
In March of 2016, Syd Barrett announced on his twitter account, that he was producing his last album, showing some photos of the studio.
The inital plan was release the album at the same day of the The Early Years boxset of the Pink Floyd, but the recordings were finished late.
Syd released two songs of the album as promotional singles, "When I was Young...", and "Hero". The latter points a reference to Keith Adventurer:
- "[...] I'm not a hero, an adventurer/I'm a singer, painter, composer [...]"
The album's tour, All-Aboard Freedom Tour, started in March 2017, confirming shows in Americas, UK/Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Japan and South Africa.
The Tame Impala's frontman, Kevin Parker, also produced the album along with Barrett and Anthony Moore. The keyboardist Richard Wright also worked with Syd in the organ and in the vocals. Their last work together was in Musical Medicine. Guy Pratt played the bass and Rick Davies played the drums. Jon Anderson featured the vocals in three tracks: "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards", "Breathe Out" and the main track, "Freedom".
Freedom features a cover of Tame Impala's song, "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards". The vocals are shared between Barrett and Jon Anderson.
The album reached the #2 position at the British album charts (OCC) and the #5 position at the Billboard 200. "Hero" reached the #34 position at the Billboard Hot 200, while "When I was young..." reached the #79 position.
